South Shore Beach

This is a site for launching hand-carried boats such as canoes or kayaks.

Description & Overview:

During the day, in the summer, there is a parking fee for non-residents to use this town beach parking lot. Weekly and seasonal passes are available. In the evening and the off-season parking is free. There is a long sandy beach here, a large dirt parking lot, and lifeguards and portable toilets during the summer. There are expansive views across Block Island Sound to Cuttyhunk Island and the Elizabeth Islands. Behind the beach is a pretty salt pond called Tunipur Pond.

Launching boats off the beach here puts you on the open waters of Rhode Island Sound, with nothing but ocean between you and South America. On most days the southwest wind fills in strongly in this area in the morning and blows briskly throughout the afternoon, producing strong waves, so be prepared for this when planning your trip.

Driving Landmarks: From Route 77 take Southworth Swamp Road/Swamp Road/Brownell Road east for 1.8 miles. Turn right and follow it 1.1 miles to where it ends at the beach.

Walking east along the beach across a shallow tidal inlet takes you to Goosewing Beach, a Nature Conservancy property. Please respect any posted restrictions. Some areas may be fenced off or otherwise restricted due to bird nesting.
